Drivers and police talk about the bad weather conditions

Dozens of drivers were trapped for up to four hours by snow on high ground in East Yorkshire.

The A1079 Arras Hill at Market Weighton was closed in both directions after heavy snowfall and a four-vehicle accident, leading to long delays.

Humberside Police said some drivers abandoned their cars while others waited for conditions to improve.

Snow ploughs and gritters brought in to clear the route also became trapped for a time.

The road is the main route between York and Hull.

PC Steve Atkinson told BBC Look North that up to 40 vehicles had become trapped and conditions were "very bleak".

One trapped motorist said he had been in his car for more than three-and-a-half hours trying to get from Leeds to Beverley.

The road reopened at around 22:00 GMT.
