Hull's lost trawlermen memorial competition winner unveiled

A cone-shaped sculpture of a fishing net will be the centrepiece of the ceremonial space

The man behind Hull's Fish Trail and Blackpool's "comedy carpet" is to help create a public memorial for 6,000 trawlermen who have been lost at sea.

A design by architects Colour Urban Design Limited has been chosen for Hull's St Andrew's Quay.

It includes a cone-shaped sculpture of a fishing net, to be created by artist Gordon Young.

The memorial, called Fathers, Sons and Mothers, will be a centrepiece for the annual lost trawlermen's service.

Process 'humbling'

It was one of three ideas being considered by fishing heritage group Stand and is expected to cost £250,000, to be raised by donations, and will be unveiled in 2014.

Mr Young started his career as a public artist in 1992 with Hull's Fish Trail, a series of 40 works of fish-themed street art in the city.

His most recent work, Blackpool's "comedy carpet", is a concrete and granite installation immortalising catchphrases and jokes by more than 1,000 comedians and writers.

Peter Owens, Colour Urban Design's managing and design director, said it was an "absolute privilege" to have its design chosen.

He said: "The process has been an education and deeply humbling.

"We hope that our work will provide a focus and an apt memorial for such loss, for many years to come."
