Hull university's £25m medical building work to start

Work is due to start this week on a new £25m medical building at the University of Hull.

The facility will include a mock hospital ward, operating theatre, intensive care facilities and a large lecture theatre.

It is part of a new £28m health campus being built at the university and is expected to be completed by 2017.

A ground-breaking ceremony took place earlier to mark the start of the construction of the medical unit.

The building, which also includes a ground-floor atrium and research space, has been part funded by chairman of Hull City Football Club Assem Allam, who has donated £7m towards the cost.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Calie Pistorius said: "Medicine and Health are strengths of the University of Hull, and the new health campus will contribute significantly to our health offer and research, and to the student experience.

"It is the latest project in a £200m investment programme at the University and we look forward to welcoming the first students through the doors."

Other projects include the construction of a new £30m student halls complex on Cottingham Road, a £28m revamp of Brynmor Jones Library, which has been completed, and a £9.5m refurbishment of Middleton Hall, which is expected to be finished in time for Hull's City of Culture year in 2017.
