Damion Vernon, from Bridlington, disappeared in Wakefield in 2014

The family of an East Yorkshire man who has not been seen for more than a year said there was a "possibility" a body found near a canal towpath is him.

Damion Vernon, of Bridlington, was last seen in December 2014.

Writing on Facebook, his brother Aaron said a body had been found near the River Calder, "a short distance from were he was supposed to have last been seen".

The family said they were told tests could take up to three weeks.

Aaron said: "There is a possibility it could be Damion but we're holding on to the hope that it's not.

"I would like thank you all for your continued support."

Mr Vernon, who was 32 when he went missing, is thought to have travelled to Wakefield, West Yorkshire, on 8 December and left a Vauxhall Corsa in Sycamore Street.

On the anniversary of his disappearance, Humberside Police said it had spoken to more than 200 people and searched a 35-mile stretch of the River Calder.

West Yorkshire Police said a body was discovered near to Low Mill Lane in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, on Monday.

The death was being treated as unexplained.
