Organisers said the two-day festival would provide "a major boost to the local economy" as well as "shining a spotlight" on Hull's UK City of Culture celebrations.

"Radio 1's Big Weekend travels to areas that wouldn't usually host large-scale music events of this kind," a BBC spokesperson said.

Details of the event were revealed by Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw on his Breakfast Show.

The DJ said he was "super excited for Big Weekend".

"Roll on May - I can't wait to party in Hull alongside Kings of Leon, Little Mix, Stormzy and loads more," he said.
