National Highways is replacing eight joints across both carriageways on the Ouse Bridge

Repairs to a major East Yorkshire road bridge which were started over a year ago may not be completed until 2024, motorists have been warned.

National Highways ordered repairs on the M62 Ouse Bridge in Goole in March 2022 after a damaged joint was found.

The agency later said all eight joints across both carriageways needed replacing, with the repairs expected to be completed by this autumn.

However, it has now said the work was due to be completed early next year.

Replacement joints for the bridge are expected to arrive later this month

Explaining the delay, a National Highways spokeswoman said: "Autumn 2023 was our best estimate of when we would be able to have the joints in place, based on information available to us at that time.

"However, the existing joints are now obsolete and we've had to redesign the joints as well as the concrete supporting structure for them.

"Now the designs are complete, our contractors are better placed to assess the works needed and the timescales, which extends the programme into early 2024."

Contractors were currently replacing a drainage channel and preparing the bridge for the new joints which were expected to arrive later this month, according to National Highways.

The spokeswoman said the agency appreciated the works were taking longer than initially anticipated, but added: "Ouse Bridge is a major and complex structure requiring specialist materials and contractors."

Traffic management arrangements would stay as they were over the Easter break, with contraflows in place, National Highways added.
