A three-year-old girl has helped rescue hundreds of starfish washed up on a beach in the wake of Storm Babet.

Jessie and her mum, Heather, were walking on Cleethorpes beach on Saturday when they spotted the five-armed animals stranded on the sand.

Together with Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue, Jessie helped save about 200 of the stricken creatures by moving them into rock pools and deep puddles.

Heather said she was "extremely proud" of her daughter.

"She was very brave," she said.

"[She was] very careful and very gentle and scooped them up from the sand with her bare hands.

"It's nice that somebody of her age cares so much."

Heather said she and her daughter had gone back to the beach the following day and helped a further 30 starfish back into the water.

"She is a massive animal lover, we all are in this family," she added.

Commenting on the rescue on social media Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue said: "Many [of the starfish] had already passed away but thankfully with the help of this family and that of our volunteers we were able to get around 200 alive starfish out of open air and into rock pools or deep puddles.

The charity added "We urge people not to take starfish home and do not disturb them in their rock pools or puddles."
