People living on several streets in Hull will be able to dispose of unwanted bulky items for free.

About 400 homes on Dorking Close, Grasby Road, Reigate Close, Saxby Road and Staines Close are to be included in the Bring Out Your Rubbish Day scheme.

The five streets involved in the initiative are all in the Ings ward, according to Hull City Council.

It was aimed at cutting the number of fires caused by fly-tipping in the area, the authority added.

The council recently agreed, external to allow £4,000 of the ward's capital projects budget to be used for the scheme.

This was because the annual ward budget of about £6,500 would not be enough to cover the costs of the event.

A fee would usually be charged to collect bulky waste from households, or residents would have to take their waste items to a recycling centre.

A Hull City Council spokesperson said residents in the five streets involved in the scheme would be "offered the chance to dispose of unwanted household items safely and efficiently".

"The event will be part of a wider programme to tackle fires that have occurred in the Grasby Park area, often as a result of fly-tipping," they added.

The spokesperson said that residents would receive a letter when a date for the Bring Out Your Rubbish Day was set.
