A former police officer has been jailed for abusing his position for "sexual gain" by having an inappropriate relationship with a female victim.

Simon Miller, 54, who was based in Scunthorpe, pleaded guilty to the improper exercise of police powers and privileges at an earlier hearing.

Humberside Police said he had been sacked following a misconduct hearing last year.

At Hull Crown Court, Miller was told he would serve 28 months in prison.

Humberside Police said criminal and internal investigations were launched into Miller's actions after a report was received of inappropriate conduct and behaviour.

The former officer had engaged in a sexual relationship with a vulnerable victim after meeting her on duty at an incident in June 2021.

After the internal investigation, a misconduct hearing took place in August last year, in private so not to jeopardise the criminal investigation.

The panel found he had breached professional standards and he was sacked and placed on the College of Policing Barred List.

Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall said he wanted to thank Miller's victim for her "bravery and courage" in helping the investigation.

"Miller abused his position as a police officer and used it for his own sexual gain," he said.

"His actions were utterly reprehensible and we will absolutely not tolerate, accept or condone this kind of behaviour, that ultimately undermines the public's confidence in us as Humberside Police and brings policing into disrepute."

He said Miller's "selfish and inexcusable" behaviour had failed to uphold and maintain the standard the force and the public expected.

Mr Marshall said police would always investigate any criminality or misconduct within the force and there were "no exceptions".

"Anyone who fails in their responsibility to serve and protect the public and meet our high expectations will unreservedly always be held accountable for their actions."
