Two libraries set up as "warm zones" for people struggling with heating costs have been temporarily shut after central heating at both sites failed.

Portable heaters had been provided as a short-term fix at Western Library and Greenwood Avenue Library in Hull.

But the Unite union had complained this was not a satisfactory arrangement.

Hull City Council confirmed on Thursday that following a review both libraries would remain closed until temperatures rose again.

In a statement, Hull City Council said: "Having reviewed temperatures, both sites will remain closed until temperatures are back to normal.

"We are in the process of rescheduling customer appointments and staff will be redeployed to alternative locations as appropriate."

The council said work would begin at the Greenwood Avenue library on Friday "with the aim being to have a new system running by Friday 15 December".

Meanwhile, "preparatory works" which were needed to get Western Library reopened had been agreed, it said.

A council spokesperson added: "These works will take place next week ahead of a site survey and installation of a temporary boiler."

Earlier, Karen Daniels, a senior steward with Unite, called for library staff to be relocated "without delay" to alternative workplaces which were "safe and warm".

She said: "Staff should not be working in those conditions."
