Engineers are blaming a faulty joint for the westbound closure at St Andrews Quay.

Part of the A63 in Hull will remain closed until Saturday morning "at the earliest" due to a bridge defect, officials said.

On Friday morning, motorists faced delays of more than 30 minutes.

National Highways said a faulty joint was found during a routine inspection of the bridge at St Andrews Quay on Thursday evening.

It stated the westbound carriageway over the bridge was closed, with diversions in place via the slip roads.

Traffic was queuing on the A63 as far back as Saltend during rush hour

During the morning rush hour, a five-mile (8km) queue of traffic, stretching back to Saltend, was reported.

In a statement, National Highways said: "The defect was discovered at around 9.40pm last night during a routine bridge inspection.

"National Highways is working to assess and repair the joint as soon as possible, however this section of road is currently expected to remain closed until tomorrow morning at the earliest. Further updates will be shared as and when they are available."

The agency confirmed works to the eastbound carriageway, requiring closures, will go ahead this weekend as planned.
