Work has begun to repair three bridges on the A180 in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council said the works on Gilbey Road, Cleethorpes flyover and Alexandra Dock Bridge would protect them for the future.

The repairs are being completed in phases with the Gilbey Road flyover closing overnight for two weeks from Monday.

Motorists have been warned of disruption.

Gilbey Road flyover will shut daily from 20:00 GMT until 06:00 with local diversions between Pyewipe and Westgate roundabouts.

The "essential" works include repairing a waterproofing layer of the bridge, replacing the structure's reinforcement bars and the road surface on both sides of the carriageway.

A spokesperson for the authority said contractors would be working around the clock to "try to get the project completed in the shortest possible time".

Stewart Swinburn, cabinet member for highways, said: "These are critical elements of our highway system in North East Lincolnshire. If these failed there would be significant impacts, both economically in terms of the amount of trade that uses the route, but also for local people going about their everyday lives.

"If we don't do the repairs soon, the structures will only get worse, meaning larger scale repairs and potentially complete closure of the route in the future."
