Plans submitted for open water swimming at Grimsby Docks

Part of Grimsby Docks could be used for public open water swimming if councillors approve plans.

A site in front of the Fish Dock sheds has been earmarked for the venture, which is part of a wider regeneration scheme including the Ice Factory.

Proposals to turn the derelict Grade II listed building into an events venue were approved in January.

Developers said they hoped the area "will become the UK capital for the green maritime and renewables sector".

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the proposal - submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council - also includes refurbishment of Henderson's Jetty, floating wildlife habitats including a "living sea wall", commercial, office and industrial spaces, as well as other public realm improvements.

A new public space - with tiered seating, a loggia and saltmarsh style planting - is also proposed offering a viewing platform over the docks.

Landscape architects Urban Green said their designs for the scheme, which would see 300,000 sq ft of the docks redeveloped, were a "nod to Grimsby Dock's history".

Site owner and developer Tom Shutes, said: "My aim has always been to keep the history and the docks alive by physically reminding visitors of the functions of the Ice Factory, which served as a beating heart of the Kasbah region.

"In bringing the regeneration of the Ice Factory and Fish Dock 2 forward, we hope that the area will become the UK Capital of a new beating heart for the modern engineering businesses and innovators who today work in the offshore wind, renewables and green maritime sector."
