Plans have been approved for a rooftop cafe to help raise money for a seaside town's lifeboat.

The restaurant would be built at the Hornsea boat launch on the South Promenade.

Income raised from the cafe would go towards supporting Hornsea Inshore Rescue, an independent lifeboat charity based in the compound.

It would have seats for between 30 and 40 people and would overlook the beach and the North Sea.

Existing metal handrails around the edge of the roof will be replaced by a higher, glazed balustrade [protective barrier] to improve safety and provide uninterrupted sea views.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the application was unanimously approved by East Riding of Yorkshire Council's planning committee.

A total of 32 comments were lodged in support of the application, which also has the backing of Hornsea Town Council.

Independent councillor Barbara Jefferson told the meeting: "This will make a magnificent addition to the South Promenade, adding to the experience and building on the boat compound.

"It's going to create a destination not only for the fishing fraternity but also for Hornsea Rescue volunteers and it will provide a space for functions and events.

"This will help the rescue service and all the good work that they do, please support the application so they can get on with trying to fund it."

Another independent councillor, John Whittle, said the plans ticked all the boxes.

"It'll improve the visitor experience and help raise funds for our wonderful rescue boat facility," he said.

"Hornsea Rescue Service is completely self-funded and they do an incredible job, having a cafe on the roof of this building fills me with joy."
