Kent primary schools to get 20mph speed limits

A 20mph speed limit will be created outside six primary schools in Maidstone, a local authority has said.

Kent County Council said it would introduce the trial after listening to parents and residents.

Councillor Bryan Sweetland, the cabinet member for environment at the Tory-run council said: "The safety of our schoolchildren is very important".

The zones will be introduced without traffic calming measures, like speed humps, to slow cars down.

'Clear safety issue'

The primary schools taking part in the trial are Leeds and Broomfield Primary School, Lenham Primary School, St Francis Catholic Primary School, Hunton Church of England Primary School, South Borough Primary School and Allington School.

Last November, South East Green Party MEP Keith Taylor accused the Conservative-run county council of "resisting" attempts to introduce lower speed limits outside schools.

He said the measure was "a clear safety issue" to stop children from being seriously injured or killed.
