A second ship is to be added to a cross-Channel ferry service between Dover and Calais which started last month.

DFDS and LD Lines said the Barfleur, to be chartered from Brittany Ferries, would join the Norman Spirit on the route on 27 April.

Both ships will be operated by French crews, with a 300-strong total staff.

DFDS and LD Lines joined forces to sail the route following the liquidation of SeaFrance in January.

Three ferries were operated by SeaFrance on the Dover to Calais route.

Its collapse led to the loss of 127 jobs in Dover and hundreds more in France.

DFDS said securing a second ship would double the frequency of its service to 10 daily departures from each port.
