Crossrail tunnel factory in Kent at full production

The factory will produce 110,000 concrete segments to line tunnels in east London

A Kent factory where tunnel parts for the Crossrail project are manufactured is now operating at full production.

Work began at the site in Chatham, Kent, last year to produce 110,000 concrete segments to line five miles (8.3km) of tunnels in east London.

Built by contractor Dragados Sisk, more than 120 jobs have been created at the factory.

Crossrail, the biggest infrastructure project in Europe, will link Maidenhead in Berkshire with east London.

The parts are to be delivered by barge from Chatham Dockyard to the entrance of the eastern tunnels at Limmo Peninsula near Canning Town in east London.

The £16bn project, which aims to establish a 118km-long (73-mile) high-speed rail link with 37 stations, is due to open in 2018.
