Dungeness B's nuclear reactors shut down during recent storms

Dungeness nuclear power station has been reconnected to the National Grid after power lines were damaged when storms battered southern Britain.

The Kent power plant's two reactors were automatically shut down when electricity to the site was cut off on 28 October.

They later restarted using the station's own generators but have not supplied power to the grid since.

Gale-force winds, rain and fallen trees caused major disruption last week.

EDF Energy said they would try and reconnect the plant's second reactor as soon as possible.

Martin Pearson, Dungeness B station director, said: "It's been a challenging week following the storm but we have returned one unit back thanks to the superb, professional efforts of all here at Dungeness B.

"We will now be concentrating on bringing the second unit back so that we can provide low carbon electricity for around 1.5 million homes each and every day."

At the time of the Dungeness B shutdown Mr Pearson said it was "a scenario we are well prepared for".
