Dungeness B will be decommissioned in 2028

Councillors have backed a proposal to lobby the government for a new nuclear power station on the Romney Marsh.

The Dungeness B nuclear power station is due to close in 2028 without a replacement.

Shepway District Council wants to see a Dungeness C power station built, which would create and sustain jobs in the nuclear industry.

Neighbouring Dungeness A was decommissioned in 2006.

The motion was proposed by councillor Rory Love, who said a new power station needed to be built.

Mr Love said: "We believe it is time to keep Dungeness right at the forefront of the government's mind, as it looks to roll out its non-carbon generation in the UK."

Dungeness B was due to close in 2018, but a £150m improvement programme from EDF has extended its life for another 10 years.
