A football club where a player died of a suspected heart attack has said it will screen all its players for cardiac problems.

Junior Dian collapsed while playing for Kent side Tonbridge Angels on 7 July. He died later in hospital.

A post-mortem examination revealed the 24-year-old's heart had stopped while he was playing.

The club said it wanted the screening programme to be extended to all footballers in the county.

'Incredible statistic'

Steve Churcher, chairman of Tonbridge Angels, said "12 fit and healthy young people" died suddenly in the UK every week.

He said: "In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89% which is an incredible statistic."

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said the government would look into heart screening in sport.

She had previously praised the Italian approach to the issue.
