Kent driver jailed for farm killing and hitting traffic warden

A man who mowed down a pensioner while stealing a trailer from a farm has been jailed for five years and five months.

Trevor Hadlow, 70, was killed by 18-year-old Michael Johnson in Gillingham, Kent on 20 November 2016.

Johnson of Shannon Place, Sheerness was also found guilty at Maidstone Crown Court of dangerous driving after he accelerated and ploughed his car into a traffic warden a few months earlier.

The jury convicted Johnson of dangerous driving, but acquitted him of attempting to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH).

He had previously pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Hadlow while committing the trailer theft.

On 8 July 2016 David Drury asked Johnson to move his car that had stopped close to a pedestrian crossing on Eastchurch High Street on the Isle of Sheppey.

When Mr Drury began printing a parking ticket Johnson accelerated and drove at the warden.

On 20 November 2016 Johnson drove a white Peugeot van on to a farm in Capstone Road, Gillingham, and hitched up a trailer.

Mr Hadlow saw Johnson and closed the gate to stop the theft but Johnson drove straight at him and left. Mr Hadlow later collapsed and died from his injuries.

Johnson was also disqualified from driving for four years.
