A man has been arrested following a crash which left a woman fighting for her life in hospital.

The blue Peugeot she was in crashed into a tree on the A249 Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone, in the early hours of Saturday.

A 28-year-old man from the area was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He remains in police custody.

A second woman, aged 25 from Sevenoaks, sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment. She was arrested in connection with the crash and has been released pending further inquiries.

The road was closed for more than seven hours while accident investigators examined the scene, near the junction with Sportsfield.

Kent Police appealed for witnesses to the crash or the moments before it to contact them.
