Cold weather warning triggers health alert for Kent residents
- Published
Kent residents are being urged to check on vulnerable people ahead of a yellow warning for cold weather this weekend.
The elderly, very young, pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions are particularly vulnerable, Kent County Council (KCC) advised.
Daytime temperatures are expected to remain in low single figures, but at night it could drop below freezing.
KCC's director of public heath said staying warm and well during cold spells was "important for everyone".
Dr Anjan Ghosh said this was particularly important for people who are more susceptible to low temperatures.
"Heating one room to at least 18C, having hot food and drinks and getting the free seasonal vaccines on offer, if eligible, can all help protect against illness brought on by the cold," he said.
Kate Langford, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Kent and Medway, said: "Prolonged cold weather can be a risk for anyone, but those who are vulnerable, including elderly people, those with breathing difficulties, and children under five, are particularly at risk."
She urged people to seek help from the NHS if necessary.
Advice for tenants
Meanwhile, tenants are advised to "work closely with their landlords to ensure that their homes are warm and safe places during the winter".
Brian Horton, Chair of the Kent Housing Group said: "Our advice to all tenants in Kent and Medway is clear - if you have a problem with issues like damp and mould, faulty heating systems or hot water supply don't delay, contact your landlord today."
The weather warning will be in place from from Saturday to Tuesday, when there will be an increased risk of frost and ice.
