Kent: Second person charged over attempted police officer murder

A second person has been charged in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer in Kent following a road crash.

Ben Wilson, of Plurenden Road, High Halden, was charged on Saturday with assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice.

The 19-year-old will appear at Medway Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The officer, who was on foot at the time, was struck by a car that allegedly failed to stop at the scene.

The crash happened at about 15:15 GMT on 26 January in Coulter Road, Ashford.

On Saturday Barry Rossiter, of Nickley Wood, Ashford, was charged with attempted murder in connection with the crash.

He has also been charged with causing serious injury by driving a vehicle dangerously and assaulting an emergency worker.

The 23-year-old appeared before Maidstone Crown Court on Saturday and was remanded to a hearing at Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday.

Four other people, two men aged 19 and 37 and two women aged 19 and 32, were also arrested in connection with the incident.

All are from the local area and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

The constable had serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

He has since been discharged.
