Lancashire farmer finds man's body in snow

A man has been found dead by a farmer in deep snow in Lancashire.

The 27-year-old was discovered dead at about 13:30 GMT, on Shay Lane, Briercliffe, near Burnley.

Lancashire Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious and there were indications it had simply been a "very tragic incident".

The force believes that the man, who has not been named, had tried to walk home in severe weather late on Friday night.

Snow and ice 'severe'

Ch Insp Derry Crorken, of Lancashire Police, said: "An investigation is under way to establish exactly what has happened although we do not believe that there are any suspicious circumstances.

"Early indications suggest that it appears to be a very tragic incident where a young man has been out with friends and has become caught up in the weather last night on his journey home.

"The snow and ice has been severe in the area with many roads not passable."

He added that people should only go out if necessary and ensure that family and friends were informed.

"Understandably this is a very difficult time for the man's family and we have specially trained officers offering them support. Our thoughts are very much with them at this very sad time," he added.
