An application to serve alcohol in all areas of Preston's Guild Hall until 06:00 has been refused.

But councillors have allowed a 24-hour licence in a proposed new section, called Level, which will include a bowling alley and restaurants.

All other areas have been granted an alcohol licence until 04:00.

Police had previously objected to a late-night alcohol licence, saying it would have a "significant impact" on the policing of the night-time economy.

The force said it could encourage other venues to seek later licences - fuelling even more crime and disorder in the city centre.
