A terrified woman has told of the moment burglars broke into her home and held a machete to her neck as they stole her pet dog.

French Bulldog Leo was snatched when two men broke down the door of the home in Accrington, Lancashire.

Traumatised owner Ellie Helm, 19, was later relieved when police found the 12-week-old puppy and returned it.

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

Ms Helm said she was woken by a loud hammering on the door by men claiming to be police officers.

"I looked out of my bedroom door and one of the men held a machete to my neck and forced his way way into my room," she said.

"He ransacked the room. It was terrifying.

"My partner and flatmate had gone away for the weekend and a friend had come to stay with me as I don't like staying in the house on my own.

"It has really scared me and my friend is pretty scared too. I feel so bad for her."

Ms Helm said she bought the puppy two weeks ago.

She continued: "He was just getting used to the house. I don't care what else was stolen I'm just so relieved to get him back."

A watch was also stolen from the home in Spencer Street on the early hours of Saturday.

Two men aged 37 and 39 from Accrington were held alongside a 22-year-old from Dukinfield, Greater Manchester.

Police are linking the burglary to an incident on Saturday morning when five men tried to force their way into another house.

When officers arrived it was found a man had been assaulted, suffering injuries to his leg and jaw.

Two 21-year-old men from Accrington, a 27-year-old man from Church and a 17-year-old boy from Rishton were arrested on suspicion of assault.

Det Insp Darren Irving, of Lancashire Police said: "I am pleased to say the puppy has been found safe after an appeal."
