Castleford Tigers' plans for a new stadium are approved

The new stadium is expected to be in use by 2013

Castleford Tigers have received planning consent for a new 13,300 stadium in West Yorkshire.

The rugby league team will move to the new 20-acre site in Glasshoughton by the start of the 2013 season.

Tigers agreed to move in a £50m deal that will see their current site become a supermarket.

Chief Executive Richard Wright said the move would "kick start regeneration in the Wheldon Road corridor and town centre".

'Final piece'

Mr Wright said the approval of the plans by Wakefield Council Planning Committee would be the "catalyst for further development of the Glasshoughton site".

The new stadium will be funded by Opus Land (North) Ltd and its financial partner Palmer Capital providing planning permission is granted to them to use the Tiger's current site for a supermarket.

Mr Wright said planning permission for the supermarket would be the "final piece of the jigsaw".

The proposed redevelopment of the Castleford Tigers current site, the PROBIZ Coliseum, for retail use replaces the previously anticipated sale of the land to Ben Bailey Homes.
