Leeds City Council wins gold at Chelsea Flower Shower

Leeds City Council has won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show for the second year running.

The centrepiece of this year's winning entry is a traditional Yorkshire mill with a working 3m (10ft)water wheel.

The garden was designed to celebrate the role water power played in Yorkshire's industrial past and its new role as a source of renewable energy.

The council won its first gold medal at Chelsea last year with a display centred around a canal lock gate.

The authority's previous seven Chelsea gardens earned bronze or silver category awards.

Adam Ogilvie, Leeds City Council's executive member for leisure, said: "This is another absolutely fantastic result for Leeds and proves once again that in Leeds we have the talent to compete and succeed against the very best in the world.

"Congratulations go to the whole parks and countryside team for producing another sensational garden.

"It was always going to be incredibly difficult to match last year's success but everyone involved was determined to do just as well again and this result makes all that hard work worth it."

Meanwhile, Doncaster Deaf Trust's urban garden won a silver gilt medal and Welcome To Yorkshire's artisan garden won a silver medal.
