Batley terror suspect Haroon Aswat extradited to US

A British man suspected of working with radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has been extradited to the US.

Haroon Aswat, 40, from Batley, West Yorkshire, is accused of conspiring with Abu Hamza to establish a terrorist training camp in the state of Oregon.

His extradition was blocked last year because of his mental health but was later approved by the High Court.

Mr Aswat, who denies involvement in terrorism, was arrested in 2005 at the request of authorities in the US.

He was transferred from prison to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital in 2008 with paranoid schizophrenia.

In September 2013, the European Court of Human Rights ruled he could not be extradited as his mental health could deteriorate.

But last month two High Court judges said they were satisfied he would receive satisfactory care in the US and he has now been escorted onto a flight to the country.

Authorities in the US have alleged that between 1 October 1999 and 30 April 2000, Mr Aswat and others conspired to control and manage people for "the use or display of physical force in promoting a political object, namely to make hijrah to, and to fight jihad in, Afghanistan".

Abu Hamza was extradited from Britain to the US nearly two years ago and found guilty of terrorism charges in May.
