Police issued a notice to close Maggie's nightclub and McFly's bar in Halifax

The owners of two clubs closed by police after two fatal stabbings nearby have been told they must remain shut.

Clubs Maggie's and neighbouring McFly's were ordered to close after Joshua Clark, 21, and Haidar Shah, 19, died in a triple stabbing in Halifax on Sunday.

Kirklees Magistrates' Court heard on Friday the venues had been associated with 25 unruly incidents this year.

The closure notice put in place on 4 October was extended until 18 October, when a further hearing will take place.

The court was told that the initial notice was issued following the death of Mr Clark and Mr Shah outside Maggie's.

A 19-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murders of the two men.

Police had already applied for the nightclub's licence to be reviewed in September following a series of incidents dating back to 2022, a representative for West Yorkshire Police told the court.

He said there had been "escalating problems" with the club, which had resulted in "disorder, criminality and serious violence occurring".

There had been 36 incidents associated with the venue, including assaults, in 2022, the court heard.

There had been a further 25 since January 2023.

The owners of the venues opposed the closure notice applied for by the police force.

Many of the incidents "did not result in police action" because the "staff took appropriate action," a representative for the owners told the court.

They also argued that McFly's was a separate venue that should not be included in the closure notice.
