Next at Toftshaw Lane in Bradford is set to close by September 2024, the retailer says

Retail giant Next plans to close a Bradford warehouse, putting 780 local jobs at risk.

The clothing brand said it intended to shut its site on Toftshaw Lane by September 2024 as part of plans to expand its facility in South Elmsall.

The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) said it had started consultation talks with Next.

Next said it anticipated sufficient jobs would be available for affected workers wishing to relocate.

The company said the move would centralise its online operations, leading to improved stock availability.

It said an option of carrying out required roof repairs at its Bradford site was not cost-effective and the move to South Elmsall would lower its environmental impact by cutting the number of lorry journeys.

Claire Hopkins, Next warehousing and distribution director, said: "This has not been an easy decision and we appreciate this announcement will be difficult for our team at Toftshaw.

"We would like to thank everyone in advance for their usual dedication and support as we work together to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, but also so that everyone on site receives the relevant help and assistance in finding alternative employment."

South Elmsall, in Wakefield, is 27 miles (43km) from the Bradford warehouse.

Usdaw national officer Mark Todd said: "Our priorities are to secure the best available deal for those impacted by these proposals.

"In the meantime, we are providing our members with the support, advice and representation they need at this difficult time."
