Kellingley Social Club will undergo a £10m revamp

New plans for a £10m revamp of a former social club in Wakefield are to be revealed, a council has said.

Workshops looking at the latest proposals for the former Kellingley Social Club in Knottingley will include local groups and politicians.

Previous plans to turn the club into a community hub had been criticised as a "waste of public money".

Councillor Michael Graham said the authority wanted the new plans to be "the best outcomes" for the town.

Wakefield Council announced a re-think of its proposals for the site last year after some local politicians called the the original plans "outrageous".

The idea was to create a hub with youth clubs and community groups, a job centre and a Citizens Advice service based there.

However, some local councillors said Knottingley already has those services available in the area.

'Community input'

People attending the workshops are also expected to be able to see initial design ideas for Kellingley Sports Pavilion, a facility located next to the old social club and another part of the regeneration project, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Mr Graham, Wakefield Council's cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: "We've already got some sound feedback from the previous public consultations about what people want to see.

"So, it's important we continue to have community input as we keep moving this forward."

He added: "We've now got some early concept ideas for the Pavilion and wider site to look at. 

"The workshops will give us initial feedback from some of the people who have a vested interest in it.

"We look forward to sharing this with the wider community as soon as we can."
