Alfie Lewis, 15, was stabbed in Horsforth, Leeds, on the way back from school in November

A teenager accused of murdering a schoolboy stood over his victim and stabbed him in the chest and leg, a jury heard.

Alfie Lewis, 15, was attacked on Church Road in Horsforth last November and died later in hospital.

The 15-year-old defendant, who cannot be named due to his age, denies murder and is on trial at Leeds Crown Court.

A boy who witnessed the attack told the jury he saw Alfie being stabbed by the accused.

The witness, who is also 15, said he was walking home from school on 7 November when he saw his friend being pushed to the ground by the defendant.

"He was stood on top of him, stabbing at him," the boy told the court.

'Just collapsed'

He described hearing Alfie shouting and asking what the defendant was doing.

"He was on the floor, putting his hands over his chest so he wouldn't get stabbed anymore," he added.

The witness said the defendant fled after the attack and Alfie "just collapsed" as tried to get to his feet.

The court also heard from another teenage witness who described the defendant as "slicing" the knife towards Alfie "at every opportunity".

The girl, who was 15 at the time, said she saw the commotion as she walked by.

In a recorded interview played to the court, she recalled Alfie shouting "What are you doing? What is this about?" and that he was "doing everything he could to get away".

She said afterwards the defendant ran away and Alfie stumbled in the road before collapsing and passing out.

Alfie was fatally stabbed on Church Road in Horsforth

Another witness, who was then 17, told the court she thought she saw the boys fighting.

Under cross-examination by Nicholas Lumley KC, for the defence, she said she did not see the defendant doing anything to Alfie while he was on the ground.

Prosecutor Craig Hassall KC previously told jurors Alfie had been walking to meet friends at the end of the school day when the defendant, who was 14 at the time, attacked him with a five-inch (13cm) kitchen knife he had brought from home.

The prosecutor said a post-mortem examination revealed the fatal stab injury was a 14cm-deep wound to Alfie's chest, which punctured his heart.

"As we understand it, [the defendant] will accept that Alfie was killed by the knife from his kitchen drawer at home, but will say that, at all times, he was acting in self-defence," he added.

The trial continues.
