One of the busiest routes into Leicester is to get a £1.5m makeover.

Work is due to start on Monday to replace nearly two miles of metal fence along Narborough Road South with a new barrier made from recycled plastic.

A 20m trial section of the new fence was installed on the southbound side near the Fosse Park roundabout in May.

The work on the new barrier is expected to take about 20 weeks. The landscaping, which involves planting trees.

Last year a consultation showed residents' main concerns were noise and the appearance of the barrier.

The improvements are being paid for with developer contributions.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "We want to make the environment a more attractive one for residents, and give a better first impression to people travelling from the nearby motorway junction and other routes.

"With a scheme of this size, some inconvenience to drivers is inevitable, but we have organised the work to minimise congestion and reduce the impact during peak hours."

Although work has been arranged to try and minimise congestion and disruption, there will be some overnight road closures in the first week and later towards the end of the project.
