Caribbean Carnival gets going in Leicester

Organisers of Leicester's Caribbean Carnival have said they expect 100,000 people to attend.

The event, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, started at 1300 BST with a procession of 1,600 performers through the city centre.

Victoria Park is hosting food stalls, family activities and an entertainment stage.

Police have warned visitors there will be road closures and parking restrictions in the area.

The summer parade is one of the biggest street carnivals outside London.

The festival was cancelled in 2006 because of soaring costs as organisers were unable to find the necessary £200,000 finance.

This year there were again fears over money but now the carnival committee say they hope it will be the best ever.
