Plans to build 4,250 houses in Leicestershire have taken a step forward.

In October last year the scheme near Lubbesthorpe was unveiled by a consortium of developers.

Blaby District Council has now received a formal planning application, which includes plans for schools, motorway bridges, shops and employment.

The council said it will study the proposals before releasing them for an "extensive" public consultation.

The proposed development by Davidsons, Hallam Land Management and Barratt David Wilson is off Beggars Lane and borders Leicester Forest East, Enderby and Braunstone Town.

Officials said it would take two to three weeks to make sure the application had enough information for it to proceed to consultation.

This would involve letters sent to residents living nearby and notices placed in the local press.

A spokesman for the authority added: "While most planning applications are processed within 16 weeks this would take longer because of its complexity and the need to make sure all relevant individuals and organisations are properly consulted.

"It is expected the Council will make a decision on whether to approve or reject the application by the end of 2011."

At the time of the original announcement, fears were raised extra traffic would put pressure on already congested roads.
