A record-breaking rower and a former cricketer are among those from Leicestershire and Rutland honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Sarah Outen was appointed MBE for services to rowing, conservation and charity, and Jack Birkenshaw becomes an MBE for services to cricket.

Air Commander Peter Gover is appointed MBE for his voluntary work in Rutland.

A knighthood was conferred on Prof Kent Woods, of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.

Ms Outen, from Rutland, became the first woman to row solo across the Indian Ocean in 2009.

She celebrated her 26th birthday last month by reaching Kazakhstan on a 20,000-mile trip around the world.

She said she was not sure when she would receive the honour.

"I hope not to be home until autumn 2013, so I think we will have to wait a couple of weeks to find out if I will be able to collect it on my return.

"I would like to do this because it would be great to go to the palace and take my mum so she can do the proud mum thing."

Those appointed OBE include Dave Bateson, head teacher of Ash Field School in Leicester, who was recognised for his services to special educational needs.
