Design for Leicestershire armed forces memorial

Four, life-size, bronze statues are being created as part of a memorial to Leicestershire's armed forces.

The memorial, Stand Easy, will depict four, young recruits taking part in a military drill and will stand in County Hall's grounds in Glenfield.

Created by Glasgow-based sculptor Kenny Hunter, the design was chosen from a shortlist of five.

Leicestershire County Council said the £75,000 tribute would remember the county's servicemen and women.

'Honouring lives'

David Parsons, leader of Leicestershire County Council, said: "We owe a huge debt to local men and women who have died fighting for their county in conflicts around the globe.

"We believe that honouring their lives with a lasting tribute is the right thing to do."

On Wednesday, sculptor Mr Hunter will be working with eight armed forces recruits from Welbeck Defence College at Loughborough University to create the memorial.

Bereaved families have also been invited to work with Mr Hunter to develop the inscription on the plaque which will be in among the bronze figures.

The memorial should be ready by the autumn.
