New war memorial for Queen's Park in Loughborough

The plaque and tree are in addition to the park's 152ft (46m) high carillon war memorial.

A memorial is being unveiled in Loughborough to remember servicemen who lost their lives in recent conflicts including Afghanistan.

The plaque has been installed to accompany an oak tree which was planted in Queen's Park in December 2010.

A Loughborough veteran suggested the idea to Charnwood Borough Council.

Gordon Cooke, 76, a former Royal Marine, said: "There is no greater sacrifice someone can make than giving their life for a comrade."

The tree and plaque are also intended to help people reflect on servicemen who have been injured in conflicts.

They are in addition to the park's carillon war memorial, completed in 1923, and Garden of Remembrance, opened in 1999.

The mayor of Charnwood, Bernard Burr, is unveiling the plaque at 11:00 GMT in front of members of the Royal British Legion and the Territorial Army.
