Leicester street death: Man arrested in murder inquiry

Police were called to the incident in the early hours of Wednesday

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a man who was found outside a railway station.

Police were called to London Road in Leicester just before 00:40 GMT where they found a man injured.

He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

It was initially thought he may have been involved in a collision with a vehicle, but police now say he may have been assaulted.

A post-mortem examination will take place to determine the exact cause of his death.

Part of London Road outside the city's railway station was closed for forensic examination but has now reopened.

Det Ch Supt Martin Smalley said: "We are currently in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from the area and carrying out many other enquiries locally in an attempt to establish exactly what happened prior to the victim being found in London Road, and to seek eye witnesses.

"The area where he was found is busy late at night and there may have been motorists and pedestrians in the vicinity around midnight who may have seen a man in or near to the road. I would urge them to contact us."

The victim has not yet been formally identified but it is believed he lived locally, police said.
