A man has been arrested after he was shot in the leg as he fled from police in a Leicester street.

Police said the 24-year-old was hurt after they visited a house in Equity Road at 22:40 BST on Monday.

"On arrival, a man fled the scene and is believed to have discharged a firearm in Beaconsfield Road," Leicestershire Police said.

Officers added he was "quickly detained by officers and taken to hospital for gunshot wounds to his leg".

He has since been discharged and arrested on suspicion of firearms offences.

Several roads in the area were closed overnight while officers carried out their enquiries.

A police spokeswoman said officers had not been responding to a call and had gone to the property "acting on information they had received".

The force said a mandatory referral was being made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as officers were present when the man was injured.
