A busy stretch of road in Leicester will be closed for 10 days as part of work to improve what has been called the city's "most confusing" junction.

The work is part of a £10.4m remodelling of the Fiveways junction, where Blackbird Road, Groby Road, Fosse Road North and Woodgate meet.

Leicester City Council is now set to close Woodgate in both directions, between its junctions with Marshall Street and Abbey Gate, from Monday.

Diversions will be put in place.

Highways officials said they hoped the latest phase to resurface the road - will be complete by Thursday 11 November, when all roadworks across the city will stop until after Christmas.

Council director of highways Martin Fletcher said: "We're working hard to keep road closures to a minimum.

"We're over the worst of the disruption now."

Work to improve the Fiveways junction is expected to be complete in the spring

Mr Fletcher added: "The ongoing works mean that we will still need to manage a rolling programme of short-term and partial road closures as we approach the final phases of the complex scheme.

"This is a major scheme that will make huge improvements to one of the most confusing junctions in Leicester.

"It will help simplify Fiveways for drivers and make it a much more attractive and route for all road users.

"It will make a huge difference for pedestrians, particularly residents, who will be able to cross the busy junction and get to the local shops safely.

"The work will also improve the junction for cyclists, for the public transport network and, importantly, simplify the junction for motorists."

Work on the overall improvement scheme is expected to be complete by late spring 2024, the council said.
