'Pork pie for breakfast is our Christmas tradition'

Is it ever too early in the day for a slice of pork pie?

Not according to some people in the East Midlands, who tuck into the traditional dish for breakfast on Christmas Day.

It is a tradition that dates back to medieval times, according to Stephen Hallam, former managing director of Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

"All the labourers and serfs, their celebration of Christmas was a pie from a pig they so lovingly raised," he said.

"Their lords and masters were busy eating swan or goose or what have you, but that was their celebration."

BBC Radio Leicester's Ady Dayman, who enjoys a slice of Melton Mowbray pork pie on Christmas morning, found out more.
