Plays, dances and film showings could be held in the gardens

A university's plan to hold outdoor events in its botanical gardens at night has been approved.

The University of Leicester had wanted to stage events like plays and film screenings at the botanical gardens in Oadby, until midnight.

People living near the gardens, near Glebe Road, had complained to Oadby and Wigston Borough Council about potential noise and disturbance.

The council has now approved an extended licence but with restrictions.

The authority has agreed part of the Leicestershire gardens, near to Beaumont House, can be used for events but only until 21:00 in the summer and 18:00 in the winter.

Further conditions mean only two events can be held each month, they cannot take place on more than three consecutive days, and no more than 700 people can attend any event.

Traffic management plans will be required and any stage or sound equipment will have to be facing away from houses, the council said.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the agreed conditions meant all previous objections to the plan had been withdrawn.
