A memorial listing the names of fallen war heroes from a Leicestershire town has been restored.

The Wigston Roll of Honour memorial, located near All Saints Church in the town, had fallen into disrepair, Oadby and Wigston Borough Council said.

However, a project led by councillor Bill Boulter and the church's associate vicar, the Reverend Christopher Johnson, has restored the memorial.

It was part-funded by a former local, who donated in memory of his mother.

Dean Curtis, who lives in Wigston, gave money to the project after his mother Carol Ann Curtis, died in 2022.

"My mum always treasured the memorial and was delighted that I wanted to help to fund its restoration, seeing the names of our war heroes restored is incredibly important to my mum and to me too, we must never forget them," he said.

The council also helped fund the restoration of the memorial, which lists the names of soldiers from Wigston who died in World War One and World War Two.

Mr Boulter said: "Restoring the Roll of Honour is a small but significant effort and I want to express my gratitude to Mr Curtis for his incredibly kind donation.

"The memorial means a lot to people in our community, and Mrs Curtis was one of those people.

"It's with great pride that this work has been completed and the memorial can now stand proudly for many years to come in its restored state."
