The council says the new bypass will relieve traffic congestion in the town centre

Motorists have been warned of disruption during the latest phase of work to build a bypass around Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.

Leicestershire County Council said the A606 Nottingham Road would be shut on Saturday and reopen on Sunday evening.

St Bartholomew's Way will also be closed from Saturday to at least Thursday, the council said.

The authority said traffic disruption was unavoidable but the work was essential to the project.

The council said there would also be no pedestrian access on Nottingham Road into St Bartholomew's Way during the closures.

Engineers will carry out drainage work and divert utilities linked to the building of the bypass.

Work on St Bartholomew's Way might also continue between 2 and 5 April, if needed, the council said.

The work is part of long-awaited plans for a distributor road to relieve traffic in Melton town centre.

The £115m north and east sections of the new route are due to be completed in 2025.
