Lincoln rail line bridges 'being planned'

Two footbridges could be built over the rail line in the centre of Lincoln, Network Rail has confirmed.

The company said it was working on plans with city and county councils and the University of Lincoln.

It added formal plans for sites at the High Street and Brayford Wharf East, which currently had level crossings, could be submitted in the summer.

Disruption caused by trains running through the city centre has been the focus of debate for a number of years.

A Network Rail spokesman said while the scheme was at an early stage, it had major potential benefits.

"This could help cut delay for pedestrians, as well as reducing the risk of misuse at the crossings.

"Although the crossings are already of the highest safety design, there are regular reports of misuse. The plans would aim to address this by providing an alternate, convenient route for thousands of shoppers, workers, students and tourists."

Earlier this month, a formal application for an the East West Link Road, which would run from Tentercroft Street to Canwick Road and divert some vehicle traffic away from the High Street level crossing, was submitted by the county council.
