Plans approved for Grantham relief road

Plans have been approved for a new relief road designed to ease traffic congestion in Grantham.

The multimillion-pound road will be built just south of the town, linking the A1 and the A52 heading to the East Coast.

Lincolnshire County Council said the road would also help generate new business.

Up to 4,000 new homes in addition to shopping facilities could be built in the area served by the road.

'Huge difference'

Work is expected to start within the next three years.

Councillor Richard Davies, the county council's portfolio holder for highways and transport, said: "The new road will mean we can ban HGVs from the town centre and reduce the number of cars."

He said the route would allow motorists to drive from the A1 to the A52 without getting held up in the middle of the town.

"It will make a huge difference to commuters," he said.

The link road will complete the full Grantham southern relief road project - which includes a purpose-built industrial estate with direct access from the A1.
