Scampton Airshow cancelled for 2018 after making loss

A new air show held at the home of the Red Arrows will not be returning in 2018 after it made a loss.

Scampton Airshow, held for the first time in September, attracted about 50,000 visitors over two days.

It is understood the loss was due to higher-than-expected costs and a lack of ticket sales.

Organisers said they wanted time to fully consider lessons learned and hoped to return in 2019.

Scampton Airshow's chief executive officer Andy Armstrong said he was proud of what had been achieved.

However, he said: "Post-event there remains a lot to reflect on, and areas where we would like to improve."

Many people responded to the news on Facebook.

Craig Thornton posted: "If it can't put on a show in the 100th year [of the RAF] then it won't happen again. They made a loss even on those prices..."

Others said the tickets were too expensive and the event was held at the wrong time of year.

Another post said there was not enough variety.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight planes are a popular sight at air shows

RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire hosted more than 100 aircraft for the event, with displays from the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Aircraft from as far away as Canada were also present.

The base is home to the Red Arrows and is also where Wing Cdr Guy Gibson commanded 617 Squadron, known as the Dambusters - specially formed to attack dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley during World War Two.

An annual air show was previously held at nearby RAF Waddington, home to the UK's Reaper fleet.

This was axed in 2015 by the Ministry of Defence over "increased security concerns".
